The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of social support (professors and peers) and study engagement on the academic performance of undergraduate business students. A survey was carried out with undergraduate students from the Administration and Accounting courses of a federal Higher Education Institution in Brazil and the final sample resulted in 204 students. The hypotheses were tested with structural equation modeling. Additionally, a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis was used. The results suggest positive effects of the support of professors and peers in the study engagement and, consequently, in academic performance. Study engagement promotes full (partial) mediation between professor support (peer support) and academic performance. Complementary findings indicate that students have up to three solutions to achieve high academic performance. Evidence is added about determinants of academic performance of students in the business area, in addition to providing evidence of the mediating role that study engagement can play between the support of professors and peers with academic performance. It also provides insights and subsidies for students, professors, directors of business colleges, universities, decision makers and society in general.
