Abstract

    As the State is not able to meet on its own the necessities of higher education in the Country, private institutions were authorized to compliment the development of these

functions. Constituted in the form of universities, university centers and integrated or isolated faculties, they came to compete and dispute for a share of the market. Thus the

general objective of this work was to verify how to characterize the competition between the institutions of higher education established in the Itajaí Valley/SC. In order to do so, an

exploratory study was made, by means of field research, with a qualitative approach. The directors of five institutions of higher education were interviewed, using a structured form

with the possibility of open-ended questions. Analysis was made considering both actual and potential competition, their performance in the market, management of these

institutions, the position of the leader, their strategic position and the challenges brought on by competition. The results of the research evidence characteristics relevant to the orientation of actions that seek strategic positioning.
