INTERGENERATIONAL MOBILITY OF OCCUPATION, EDUCATION AND STANDARD OF LIVING IN BRAZIL

Authors

Abstract

This article aims to investigate intergenerational mobility in Brazil based on occupation, education and standard of living, using as a database a slightly more recent sample (2018) and not yet used for this purpose, made available by WVS. For this, the ordered multinomial Logit model was used, followed by its marginal effects, in addition to an analysis of heterogeneous effects. Among the results, it was found that the intergenerational variable of education has a greater effect than occupation in raising the standard of living of individuals. It was also observed that children of parents with higher socioeconomic conditions are likely to maintain the standard of living that their parents had, thus hindering upward income mobility among the poorest and, consequently, the redistribution of income in the country.
