The Controllership in financial institutions: case study in Banco do Nordeste do Brasil S.A.

Abstract

Globalization and integration of international markets have disposed the business in general and financial institutions in a competitive and complex environment, reinforcing the need for these institutions to create structures, processes and products that contribute to business effectiveness and continuity. In this context, the Controller such as organizational unit, with the others departaments in the company, to perform its functions, should assist the managers of the enterprise in obtaining of the business efficiency. This study aims to identify the main functions of controller unit in a financial institution in Brazil and how its performance is perceived by mean managers. To achieve the objective of the research it was elaborated a case study in Banco do Nordeste do Brasil S. A. (BNB), adopting as a procedure of investigation the literature and documentary research and a implementation of questionnaires and interviews with its main managers. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the controller unit of BNB is in consonance with the concepts presented in the literature, because it executes a variety of tasks related to planning, control, evaluation and information management, which are clearly perceived by significant proportion of managers and contributes considerably to the achievement of its business effectiveness.
