Diferença do desempenho educacional entre estudantes de zonas rurais e urbanas no Brasil: uma análise quantílica incondicional
Abstract
O Brazil has a solid system of assessment and diagnosis of basic education that helps understand the differences in student performance in schools in rural and urban areas. In this regard, the objective of the present study is to assess whether, when controlling for a relevant set of characteristics established in the literature, the student's location in rural areas is still a determining factor in explaining the differential in educational performance compared to urban areas. The empirical strategy involves estimating Treatment Effects on the Means with Quantiles, based on unconditional quantile regressions, for students in Brazilian municipalities between 2013 and 2017. The sample is constructed from microdata from the National Assessment of Basic Education (Saeb) for the 5th grade of elementary school, using proficiency in mathematics as a proxy for educational performance. The results of the estimates for the treatment effects on the quantiles robustly indicate the presence of a penalty for rural school students, all else being equal.
