Professional Qualification and Organizational Commitment in Hospitality

Abstract

Purpose -  The purpose of this work is to analyze the relations between professional qualification and the commitment of employees in the hospitality industry in the municipality of João Pessoa/PB, in the Northeast of Brazil.

Design/methodology/approach - Descriptive study, of quantitative approach, with application of questionnaires among employees of hotel businesses in the municipality of João Pessoa, capital of the state of Paraíba. For the data analysis, descriptive analyzis, factorial analysis, reliability analysis, Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were performed with SPSS statistical software.

Results -  The results show that the more the employees perceive the benefits of professional qualification, the more it reinforces their need to remain in the company due to its benefits, as well as strengthening the employee's sense of belonging and identification with the company, once both objectives move towards the same focus. Thus, the results of this present study suggest that hotel management should focus on improving the level of commitment of its employees by providing opportunities through appropriate qualification efforts.

Originality/Value -  From the academic point of view, this study contributes to the studies in the hospitality sector, being able to prove the existence of positive relations between professional qualification and organizational commitment. From the managerial perspective, it helps to understand the importance of investing in qualification, perceiving the employee as a fundamental element in the productive process.

Possui graduação em Hotelaria pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba (2011). Especialista em Turismo e Desenvolvimento Local pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba (2014). Mestra em Turismo pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (2018). Doutora em Turismo pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (2022). Foi Professora Substituta na Universidade Federal da Paraíba, blocada no Departamento de Turismo e Hotelaria (2019-2021). Atualmente Professora Bolsista do Programa Estadual PARAÍBATEC, no curso Organizador de Eventos. Atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Hotelaria, Turismo, Gestão de Pessoas e Serviços. Pesquisadora do Grupo de Estudos em Gestão do Turismo da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (GESTUR/UFRN/CNPq).

Doutora em Administração (2011) pela Faculdade de Economia, Administração e Contabilidade da Universidade de São Paulo (FEA/USP). Mestre em Administração (2007) e Bacharel em Turismo (2005) pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Atuou como Secretária Municipal de Turismo de Tibau do Sul. Atualmente, é professora do Departamento de Turismo da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte. Coordenadora do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Turismo - PPGTUR/UFRN. Editora da Revista de Turismo Contemporâneo - RTC. Atua como vice-líder do Grupo de Estudos em Gestão do Turismo (GESTUR/UFRN). Tem experiência na área de Turismo, com ênfase em Eventos.
