Abstract

The promotion of festivals has been widely used by destinations with the aim of enhancing the local culture and still increase the flow of tourists in the locality. However, it is worth emphasizing that the practice of festivals tends to generate impacts in the receiving community. In this way, it is fundamental to carry out different studies in order to evaluate how the residents perceive the impacts promoted by the festival in their locality. In this perspective, this abstract aims to identify if the frequency of festival participation influences in a statistically significant way the residents' perception of the economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts promoted by Oktoberfest in the destination. The research had a quantitative approach and its sample was constituted by 520 residents of Santa Cruz do Sul who attend the Oktoberfest at least once per edition. For analysis of the results, the One-Way ANOVA variance analysis technique was used. The results showed that the frequency of participation in Oktoberfest is able to influence the residents' perception of all the impacts of the festival. The Oktoberfest population once or twice a year tends to see less of the positive impacts promoted by the festival and more negatively, residents who visit four times a year or more have shown that Oktoberfest promotes cultural impacts positive in Santa Cruz do Sul.
