Rothschild & Alves: firma imaginada (1890-1906)
Abstract
Este artigo busca problematizar a relação entre Rodrigues Alves e os banqueiros ingleses N. M. Rothschild & Sons, recorrendo ao imaginário sobre a associação com os capitais financeiros e externos na longa atuação política do terceiro presidente civil do Brasil. Através de documentação variada, evidencio que os capitais externos disputaram os rumos da política econômica republicana em interlocução franca com representantes das classes dominantes. ser politicamente conflitantes aos interesses dos grandes proprietários nacionais, o fato é
que o mais destacado representante político da poderosa oligarquia paulista tinha relações
nada republicanas com “os nossos agentes em Londres”.
