Productive efficiency and the future of regional disparities in Brazil

Abstract

We use Stochastic Production Frontiers to estimate the recent levels and the evolution of productive efficiency across regions in Brazil. Results are available for agriculture, industry and services, as well as for total production. We observe a substantive efficiency growth exhibited by agriculture at the national level, which is counterbalanced by the poor performance of services. The regional results show that efficiency levels still replicate, in general, the regional inequality that marked the country’s history through decades. However, the efficiency growth reveals new signs of convergence among states, especially for industry, with effects on the aggregate production. This indicates that inequality trends in productive efficiency may be starting to change.

Possui graduação em Economia pela Universidade de São Paulo (2003) e doutorado em economia pela Universidade de São Paulo em 2010, com complemento na Universidade de Cambridge. Professora Doutora do Instituto de Relações Internacionais IRI-USP (2011). Tem experiência na área de Economia, com ênfase em Economia Regional, Econometria, Economia Espacial e Comércio Regional.

Economista (Associação Padre Anchieta de Ensino, 1971), Mestrado (1975) e Doutorado em Economia (1982), IPE, FEAUSP. Professor da FEAUSP desde 1973; Livre-Docente desde 1985; Professor Titular desde 1995. Foi chefe do Departamento de Economia, vice-diretor e diretor da Faculdade de Economia, Administração e Contabilidade da USP. Distinguished Visiting Professor, University of Illinois (2012). É membro do Conselho de Relações Internacionais da USP, do Conselho Deliberativo do Instituto de Relações Internacionais da USP e do Overseers Committee of the Lemann Institute for Brazilian Studies, University of Illinois. Tem experiência na área de Economia, com ênfase em Economia Regional, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: desigualdade regional, desigualdade de renda, convergência, distribuição de renda e decisões de investimento. Foi membro do conselho científico da Regional Science Association International, foi fundador e é membro do Conselho Superior da ABER - Associação Brasileira de Estudos Regionais e da Regional Science Association of the Americas. É membro de conselhos editoriais de 4 revistas internacionais e de 6 nacionais. É parecerista de 15 revistas internacionais e de 12 revistas nacionais. Tem Bolsa Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq; é pesquisador do INCLINE - Núcleo de Apoio à Pesquisa em Mudanças Climáticas da USP; é pesquisador do INCT Mudanças Climáticas, com apoio do CNPq e da Fapesp.
