Violence against the elderly during the Covid-19 pandemic

Abstract

Objective: to understand the situation of vulnerability of the elderly to situations of violence during the Covid-19 pandemic from the perspective of health and social care professionals and managers. Method: descriptive study with a qualitative approach, in two Basic Health Units and a Social Assistance Reference Center, in Belo Horizonte. Theoretical foundation: violence against the elderly is a public health problem, with a great impact on the quality of life of the victim and the pandemic has contributed to situations of violation of rights. Results: the interviews revealed that cases of violence are identified by professionals in work contexts, but social isolation restricts the presence of the elderly in these scenarios, making it difficult to recognize the problem. Participants showed an increase in the number of complaints during the pandemic and a greater occurrence in the family environment. Conclusions: violence against the elderly represents a challenge for health and social care professionals and managers, and it is essential to adopt intersectoral actions to face it.
