Objective: To carry out diagnostic mapping of indicators of quality and safety of care in hospital care, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Quantitative, descriptive, retrospective study, in which information was collected from notifications in VIGIHOSP, and from audits, from August 2019 to August 2020 in a federal university hospital in the Midwest region of Brazil, analyzed by basic statistics and graphic presentation. Results: During the pandemic, there was a reduction in the incidence of primary laboratory bloodstream infection in the Adult (10.8%) and Neonatal (8.7%) ICUs, even compared to other studies; and an increase in the rates of adherence to hand hygiene by professionals (73%) and in the proportion of notifications (55%). However, it found an increase in the incidence of pressure injuries (29.8%) and in the institutional mortality rate (3.8%). Conclusion: The research points to the need to be guided by results that add value to hospital care, ensure better rates, avoid never events and preserve or enhance standards of quality and safety, with a view to efficiency and effectiveness of care.
