A first exploratory stage of the stabilished purchasing planning system at Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho and the second stage a quantitative analysis of management strategies and their physical-budgetary impact. The analysis of the case showed that the hospital in question has good inventory control however does not use any formal inventory planning method in addition to not controlling costs and their budgetary impact.Multifactorial problems require integrated solutions. Increasing budget will not always make it possible to buy better. Creating hospital consortia, monitoring costs of loss and maintenance of inventories, using lean and coordinated models are essential measures for public quality management.Keyword: hospital logistics, inventory management, purchasing planning
