Resumen

El presente artículo se basa en más de una década de trabajo de campo etnográfico en Río de Janeiro, un nexo en el panorama sexual mundial en el que la prostitución no está penalizada y en el que los burdeles, aunque ilegales, suelen ser tolerados, protegidos e incluso gestionados por la policía y otras autoridades.  Dadas las sanciones morales empleadas contra las mujeres que se dedican a la venta de sexo, creemos que la institución del burdel puede ser, en algunas situaciones, más importante para las mujeres que para los hombres a la hora de delimitar los límites de la reciprocidad íntima, un hecho que a menudo es pasado por alto por las teóricas feministas que hablan de la prostitución pero que rara vez la observan sobre el terreno.  En este sentido y contexto, los burdeles y las estructuras de apoyo asociadas a ellos pueden entenderse como "interruptores" estratégicos para las mujeres que buscan evitar la lógica de la reciprocidad y el sexo.
