Abstract

This photographic record illustrates and discusses the experiences of Fortaleza and João Pessoa, two cities recognized by UNESCO as creative cities. Fortaleza received the title for Design and João Pessoa for crafts. Inspired by photo ethnography, we conducted a photo essay at the end of 2020. The records present examples that show the relevance of each of these cities having been recognized as a creative city. Despite criticism, the perspective of the creative city can be an important socioeconomic development strategy based on activities creatives. Investments and qualified professionals can be attracted to these cities and can contribute to local development. Our records seek to illustrate these experiences and instigate a greater debate on the importance of the creative city in the academic, business, and public policy fields.
