BREAST CANCER AND FEMALE: A REPORT OF EXPERIENCE WITH WOMEN IN TREATMENT IN TERTIARY CARE

Abstract

The work approaches an interdisciplinary theoretical development from an intervention carried out in the event “Outubro Rosa” in a public hospital in Belo Horizonte/MG. The objective was to provide a space for reflection for patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer, through the making of a bra as a symbol of the feminine. Methodological instruments: questionnaire, oral presentation / conversation circle and sewing workshop, with the participation of 23 patients. The result was an interactivity between the patients and that each one used that space to talk about the concreteness of the body, its measurements, adjustments, limitations, choices and, consequently, about the subjective effects. And especially the resignification of the moment experienced in the treatment. In the intervention, Occupational Therapy was an instrument to unveil the female theme, represented in the production of the bra, which allowed elaborations based on the emotions experienced by patients in diagnosis and treatment. At the end of the intervention, the participants verbalized their perceptions and, as the patient who made the piece stated: “vanity is important in this case. And never give up, of course.”
